Hello, my name is Cecily Greggs. I am a sophomore here at Slippery Rock University My major is communications with the concentration of journalism. So, I guess you could say that I needed to take this class for my major, but don't worry I'm excited to take it for the sole purpose of learning how to better the journalism world using social media. Since Dr. Harry keeps telling us journalism majors that the newspaper industry is dying and there is not as many journalism major as there use to be.So, I am hoping I can learn more and truly get a grasp of the new media journalism so, I do not end up homeless and hungry on the streets.
I am minoring in theatre, and because of this I have been in several plays at SRU, and am a high jumper for the track team. I also work for the track team and work at the YMCA out in Grove City. But that is just a little bit about me, back to the whole social media thing.
I enjoy going on social media because it is a whole new world, there is so much to explore out there on the World Wide Web. As much as I enjoy it, I'm not much of a poster myself, unless it is on Instagram but even then I tend to just scroll through and look at things on my feed or explore page. My Facebook is honestly pretty dry when it comes to social media. I mostly just enjoy reading the fights that go on with the older and younger crowd. I do not have a Twitter, so I don't really know how it works but since I had to make one just for this class, I'm sure I'll get hang of it. I confess, that I do get a lot of my news for these social media accounts, but I will also go to more reliable websites to find the latest updates on anything notable that is happening throughout the world.
The stand-alone digital media outlet that I chose to follow was The Dodo. I picked The Dodo, because I see this media outlet all the time on Facebook and Instagram. The Dodo is a news outlet that posts a lot of articles about animals and the planet, which are two things i am very passionate about.
The legacy media outlet that I chose was CNN. CNN is always up to date because of it's live updates. I am also familiar with it because it was a resource my teachers referenced a lot in bot high school and middle school when they asked us to write about current events. Plus, in my humble opinion CNN is a very trustworthy news site.
